Overview of DOE Award Process
DOE encourages its sites to nominate projects for DOE's internal P2 Star Awards and the White House's Closing the Circle Awards, which both recognize exemplary performance in integrating environmental stewardship practices to reduce risk, protect natural resources, and enhance site operations.
74 projects were nominated by DOE sites for awards in 2007. Seven projects were selected as P2 Star winners and another 4 projects were selected as P2 Star Honorable Mentions. The P2 Star winners were selected by an independent panel of judges from the Department of Commerce, the Department of Veteran Affairs, and the Department of Agriculture, from a group of "Best in Class" projects identified by DOE Program Secretarial Officers and the Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration. The 32 Best in Class projects were themselves chosen out of 74 nominations made by DOE sites.
The DOE Awards program is aligned with the White House Closing the Circle (CTC) Awards. The CTC Awards recognize outstanding achievements of Federal employees and their facilities for efforts that resulted in significant contributions to, or have made a significant positive impact regarding, environmental stewardship. The awards focus on waste prevention, recycling, and green purchasing activities under Executive Order (E.O.) 13101, environmental management under E.O. 13148, green/sustainable buildings under several executive orders, and reduced fuel usage under E.O. 13149. In 2007, 4 DOE projects won the White House Closing Award and 2 projects earned honorable mention.
